Ein Gefühl von Start-Up | Feels like start-up

In dieser Woche findet zum ersten Mal das WDR 3 Jazzfest statt. Im Line-Up finden sich zwar auch einige amerikanische Musiker - Rudresh Mahanthappa und Ryan Truesdall - doch was besonders ins Auge sticht, ist die Vielfalt an europäischem Jazz. Dies ist kein Zufall, wie Festivalleiter Bernd Hoffmann erklärt: „Ich habe ja den Vorteil, dass ich das Festival zu einer Zeit machen möchte, in der es nicht die vielen Band-Tourneen aus den USA gibt. Das heißt, der Fokus wird ganz selbstverständlich auf dem europäischen Jazz liegen."

Die Rolle des WDR als Jazz-Programmacher und langjähriger Förderer der Szene ist unübertroffen, Hoffmann will darüber hinaus den Spot auf Innovation lenken. Bei der Auswahl der Künstler wurde besonderer Wert auf neue Impulse gelegt - das WDR 3 Jazzfest, so Hoffman, ist ein „Festival der Premieren".

Auch medial beschreitet das WDR 3 Jazzfest neue Pfade. Hoffmann: „Wir werden mit Studierenden der internationalen Filmschule Köln zusammenarbeiten, einen Festival-Blog veröffentlichen und andere Möglichkeiten des Internets nutzen, um möglichst viele Menschen zum Jazz zu bringen." Die größte Überraschung ist, dass bei einem Sender mit einer solch langen Tradition trotzdem ein Gefühl von Start-Up spürbar ist.

This week the first WDR 3 Jazzfest takes place. Some American-based musicians - Rudresh Mahanthappa and Ryan Truesdell - are in the line-up, but what catches the eye in the programme is a fascinating diversity of European jazz which the festival will showcase. As Festival director Bernd Hoffmann explains, this is deliberate: "I have the advantage of putting on a festival, when there aren't a large number of band tours from the USA. The distinct focus of this festival be on European jazz."

WDR's credentials both as a programmers of jazz and a supporter of the scene are second to none, and yet Hoffmann feels the need to innovate. When choosing the artists, there has been a priority that they should be able to demonstrate that they have something genuinely new to offer. As Hoffmann says, the WDR Jazz Festival will be carving out a reputation as a "festival of first performances".

The programming and organizing team will be taking that concept further. As Hoffmann explains: "We want to work together with students from the Cologne Musikhochschule, we want to publish a festival blog, using the new technologies around the internet, bringing them to jazz, and getting the word out through WDR 3." When Hoffmann talks about this new project, one senses a spirit of creativity, innovation. And perhaps the most surprising thing, in the context of a broadcaster with such a proud heritage and a stable mission, is that the whole venture has both the feel and the energy of a start-up.
